Documentary, 2 x 45 min.
Written and directed by: Stephan Lamby and Michael Rutz
Is it possible to come close to Helmut Kohl? During the shooting of their documentary the two directors Stephan Lamby and Michael Rutz got so close to the former chancellor as never a journalist before them. For four days they talked to Helmut Kohl about the highlights and set backs of his life – and all this happened at his private home in Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim. Helmut Kohl candidly talks about his “magic moments” eg. the election as chancellor in 1982, the fall of the wall, the European unification. He also gives an insight into traumatic experiences, in so far unkown details, such as attempted putsches against him within his party, the fund-raising-scandal, the suizide of his wife Hannelore. The directors accompanied Helmut Kohl not only throughout Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim but also to his chosen residence Berlin and on a journey to the USA. Furthermore they interviewed, amongst others, George Bush sen., Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, James Baker, Richard von Weizsäcker, Oskar Lafontaine, Hans-Dietrich Genscher. The comprehensive documentary shows in how far life story and world history meet in the life of Helmut Kohl.
