As it happens, the young man could have led a quiet, contemplative life as a distinguished citizen of a Southern US town. But instead of this, a maelstrom pulls Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) into an abyss of alcohol and opium addiction, debt and hopelessness. Toward the end of his short life, Poe goes to seed. A few days before his death he is found in a shelter for the homeless. In Europe, he is largely known as the creator of horror and detective stories (“The Raven”, “Ligeia”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Pit and the Pendulum”). Yet Poe also worked as a journalist and a literary critic.
Manfred Uhlig’s documentary shows the life and work of Poe in original locations and uses actors to reenact key moments from his life. For the dramatization of the poem “The Raven”, Poe experts from around the world have contributed their interpretations on video.
